This academy is run in association with Positive Dog Training Company, who provide science-based training and animal behaviour therapy that supports the welfare and wellbeing of animals.
Grade 1 – Dipping a paw
This is awarded when:
- They become confident swimming using one type of technique
- They are happy for the hydrotherapist to shower and shampoo them
- They will let the hydrotherapist perform a health check, including checking their eyes, teeth, and ears
- They are comfortable being towel dried off and having a coat put on (if they have one)
Grade 2 – Splashing around
This is awarded when:
- They become confident swimming with limited guidance from the hydrotherapist, including some swimming without having their buoyancy aid held onto
- They are willing to follow the hydrotherapist, with the use of a toy if needed
- They are comfortable relaxing on the pod between swims and let the hydrotherapist check their pulse
Grade 3 – Making waves
This is awarded when:
- They have mastered the 3 main techniques, swim rounds, hold outs, and figures of 8
- They can swim without being held continuously by the hydrotherapists
- They are happy to play on the pod and have the hydrotherapist massage and stroke them
Grade 4 – Born to swim
This is awarded when:
- They are strong swimmers and have graduated from a buoyancy aid to a harness
- They are happy to follow the hydrotherapist and swim unaided the majority of their time in the water
- They want to step or jump off the platform
- They have started to learn guided throw out swimming technique and have fun in the pool
